space invaders new art from artists of colour an exhibition shown at Art Lacuna SPACE London (2015) Curated by Michael Bryan and Zara Lawson (myself).
This exhibition was in response to structures of power/places reserved for only white men. The inspiration came from the book SPACE INVADERS: Race, Gender, and Bodies Out of Place by Nirmal Puwar (Berg, 2003). The book discusses institutional racism, which many artists of colour have and still face at some point.
My work for the MA degree show will be on my own personal experience in the present day as an artist. The work will reflect upon institutional racism, sexism, empire and the link to the past were I faced racism in schools as a child/pre-teen growing up in Liverpool. I may also touch upon the prejudice I faced from Afro-Caribbean girls, seen as a “substitute” for the English girl, to vent their own frustrations.
